Environmental management

During construction

A comprehensive environmental management system (EMS) was developed for the Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project to address issues raised in the environmental impact assessment. Specific management plans were prepared for the development (construction) of the permanent system and for any dredging and nourishment activity.

Issues addressed that were associated with construction included: consultation, disruptions to public access, community information, noise and vibration management, traffic and air quality management, soil and water quality management, cultural heritage management, infrastructure management, waste management, Letitia Spit bird habitat, landscaping management, historic shipwreck management and accident and emergency responses.

Issues addressed that were associated with dredging included: consultation, community information, sand removal and placement strategy, sand and water quality management, noise and vibration management, historic shipwreck management and accident and emergency responses.

During operations

Another EMS was developed to address issues raised in the environmental impact assessment that relate to the long term operation of the system.

Issues addressed include: consultation strategy, community information, sand retrieval and placement strategy, noise and vibration management, traffic management, sand and water quality, infrastructure and public access management, waste management, Letitia Spit avifauna habitat strategy, landscaping management, historic shipwreck management, accident and emergency response, beach management and nourishment strategy, Kirra Reef monitoring, Duranbah surf quality and beach amenity management and Tweed River lower estuary management.

Ongoing environmental monitoring is undertaken by the Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project.

Monthly environmental monitoring summaries

As part of the Project's broader monitoring program a summary of daily to monthly monitoring results (e.g. wave and beach conditions) is made available each month.
