Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project

A joint project of the New South Wales and Queensland Governments

Tweed River Image

The Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project is a sand transport system that collects sand from the southern side of the Tweed River entrance and pumps it under the river to outlets on the northern side. From there the sand is transported by wave currents to nourish southern Gold Coast beaches.

Project objectives

  • to establish and maintain a safe, navigable entrance to the Tweed River
  • to provide a continuing supply of sand to the Southern Gold Coast beaches consistent with natural drift rates, together with such additional sand needed to restore the recreational amenity of the beaches and maintain it.

Project sponsors

The project is implemented by the NSW Department of Lands in conjunction with the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency. Gold Coast City Council makes a financial contribution to the project and Tweed Shire Council also supports the project.
